these images were shot in a very working class pulqueria in Mexico City over the course of about three hours. I've never felt more the gringo in my life but these people made me feel welcome. Pulque is a milky, sour tasting alcoholic drink made from the fermented sap of the maguey (agave) plant. Most of these men were drunk on pulque. They kept trying to buy me drinks but their water supply was a 50 gallon oil drum in the back of the bar. The bartender (jicarero) would dip a large jug into the barrel and pour that into a big lobster pot type container then mix the pulque in and other ingredients then he would dip pitchers into that and put them out on the tables. I drank anyway and was fine. I guess the pulque was strong enough to kill any germs!
